CNN —England international rugby player Billy Vunipola has been fined and handed a suspended four-month prison sentence after resisting arrest at a nightclub in Mallorca, a Spanish court said on Monday. He was charged with serious disobedience to an authority and resisting arrest, according to the court sentence document seen by CNN. “The accused admitted that he was in a nightclub in Palma where some police officers came because of a fight,” the court statement said. The 31-year-old also confirmed that he had been charged with resisting the law and had paid a €240 fine. According to the three-page court sentence document, Vunipola admitted that he had not followed police orders and subsequently caused an injury to an officer’s right wrist and hand, requiring medical attention.

CNN —England captain Owen Farrell is taking a break from international rugby “to prioritise his and his family’s mental well-being,” club side Saracens announced on Wednesday. The club said that Farrell will miss next year’s Six Nations but will continue to play for and captain Saracens. He was also the top scorer at the World Cup with 75 points. “Everyone at England Rugby is fully behind Owen’s decision,” England head coach Steve Borthwick said in a statement. Farrell led England during the team's Rugby World Cup semifinal defeat against South Africa in Paris last month.

MARSEILLE, France, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Owen Farrell was the official man of the match but not an England fan leaving the Marseille Velodrome is likely to have looked beyond Ben Earl for the outstanding player in England's 30-24 World Cup victory over Fiji on Sunday. "After we played Fiji at Twickenham we got told we wouldn't get out the group, but now we are in the semi-final, one of the best four teams in the competition. Jones preferred the bulk of Vunipola to the athleticism Earl brings to the role and Borthwick also took a while to be convinced. However, as a rare bright light in a dismal series of warm-up games the 25-year-old Earl forced his way into the starting team and has been superb at the World Cup. I don't like to pick out individuals after such a team effort today but he certainly played a big part."

"Last weekend wasn't good enough, it was poor, but we have had a really good open and honest review," George told reporters. You'll see a very different England team on Sunday." George, a British and Irish Lion and veteran of many big games with Saracens, said the England team were embracing the occasion as they seek to improve on their run to the final four years ago. Fiji have improved their all-round game, particularly the scrum, but their lineout still looks vulnerable and is an area England expect to dominate. "The way Portugal targeted their line-out was something that was very interesting and especially how they go about it," George said.

Summary Rules change means former Wallabies flyhalf eligibleSamoa target Chile clash as most winnable Pool D gameFormer All Blacks Luatua and Sopoaga also featureTOULOUSE, France, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Samoa have selected 35-year-old Christian Leali'ifano, who scored the most points for Australia at the 2019 World Cup, as flyhalf in their opening Pool D clash against Chile in Bordeaux on Saturday. Samoa are taking advantage of a relaxation in World Rugby's eligibility rules, which means players who stand down for three years from appearing for one country can then play for another for which they qualify. That means they can also field former All Blacks Steven Luatua, who starts at number eight, and the versatile Lima Sopoaga as a replacement back. Former Highlanders and Wasps player Sopoaga can play at flyhalf or fullback and, while New Zealand-born, qualifies for Samoa through his family background. Samoa will target Chile, the lowest ranked team at the tournament, as their most winnable game in a pool also containing England, Argentina and Japan as they look to progress from the pool stage for the first time since 1999.

England's Farrell has red card overturned

However, Farrell argued that the offence was worthy of only a yellow card and the independent judicial committee agreed. "After reviewing all the evidence... the committee concluded that the Foul Play Review Officer was wrong, on the balance of probabilities, to upgrade the yellow card issued to the player to a red card," the committee said in a statement. In the Committee’s opinion, this mitigation was sufficient to bring the player’s act of foul play below the red car threshold. Unlike the Foul Play Review Officer the committee had the luxury of time to deliberate and consider, in private, the incident." The bans that are being put in place for foul play are not stringent enough.

Players need to join talks on Premiership future, says George
  + stars: | 2022-10-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Oct 19 (Reuters) - Players need to have a say in the future of Premiership rugby after Wasps and Worcester Warriors went into administration, Saracens and England hooker Jamie George said on Tuesday. Wasps made 167 players and staff redundant, British media reported, after going into administration on Monday, while Worcester went into administration last month. England's Rugby Football Union regulations state that a club placed in administration during the season will be relegated for the following campaign. "I think the players need to be at the forefront of it. "I don't have all the answers but I am hoping people behind the scenes at the Rugby Football Union, Premiership Rugby and the Rugby Players' Association are having these conversations," he said.
